Description
I've been fortunate to see this small lighthouse, sitting carefully on a granite breakwater in Lake Champlain, each time my wife and I have visited her home state of Vermont. At night, it's light is clearly visible, and during the day, if one is sightseeing the small boats rounding the rocks from shore, this small lighthouse provides the perfect counterpoint to the sailboats passing by. The lighthouse itself is a replica of the original built in 1857. It was destroyed during a storm in 1876. The current replica is circa 2003. Though more often than not, the waters in the harbor off Lake Champlain beside Burlington Vermont are smooth enough for one man skiffs and paddle boats, the lake does receive a heavy dose of winter storms and ice.
Below, is additional information regarding my vantage point from Battery Park of the lighthouse.
One of a series of images I was very fortunate to take the one winter I've spent in Burlington, Vemont. Though similar to my image behind a low stone wall in Battery Park, the vantage point out to Lake Champlain and Waterfront Park is via standing on that wall. My wife says she would walk, her hand snug in her father's hand as he held her steady. Battery Park is also the site of war time action during the War of 1812 with England and a memorial cannon is located directly behind my viewpoint. The jut of land below and out on to Lake Champlain is part of Waterfront Park. This is a wonderful park to visit any time of year, even winter (smiles). This image is part of a full size photo. I also have several other outtake versions available here at Fine Art America, including panoramas and a separate detail shot.
